theory

The theory test is straightforward if you take the time to study and prepare for it. It comprises of a series of multiple–choice theory questions followed by a series of video clips to test your hazard perception.

From 3rd September 2007, there will be 50 multiple-choice questions with a pass mark of 42.

The hazard perception part of the test consists of 14 video clips featuring real road scenes. As soon as you spot a hazard developing, you should respond by clicking the mouse. The earlier the hazard is spotted the higher the score. A hazard is defined as any situation which may result in the driver having to change their speed or direction. In order to pass candidates must score at least 44 out of 75.

You are given 80 minutes to complete both parts and you must pass both to receive an overall pass.

Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years and you must have passed your theory test in order to book your practical driving test.

You can book a Theory Test by calling the DSA on 0870 010 1372 or by booking online at www.dsa.gov.uk.
